Optimal is the enemy of progress. Investing time into optimization after a “sloptimal” solution has been developed is inefficient and can lead to frustration and stalled progress when it comes to applying best practices in the clinic.
In this 13-hour online course, the principles of exercise prescription are looked at through the lens of the uncertainty that clinicians deal with in the trenches. By combining evidence with heuristics, those who enroll will leave with an understanding of how to apply exercise in a practical manner that uses feedback loops to self-correct. This course emphasizes critical thinking and clinical decision making in therapeutic exercise prescription.
The course involves recordings of Q&A sessions with case studies and lab reviews. There is a final quiz at the end of the course to allow the participant to demonstrate learning.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the role uncertainty plays in rehabilitation
- Understand and implement interventions based on the envelope of function, optimal load, and minimum effective dosage
- Prescribe exercise dosage based on specific tissue adaptation goals
- Explain and implement autoregulatory approaches
- Understand an implement the training fundamentals of accommodation, continuity, individuality, progression, specificity, synergy, and variability
- Critically apply concepts of dosage including load, volume of work, and rest periods
- Develop a concise, efficient, and effective home exercise program
- Progress, regress, and lateralize exercises
- Perform a patient needs analysis and program based upon it
- Implement strategies to develop change of direction, rate of force development, and stretch shortening cycle

Presenter:
Scot Morrison, PT, DPT is currently working as a senior sports scientist in Major League Baseball. His diverse career in sports medicine and performance include highlights such as time spent as the director of sports medicine for the MLS Professional Referee Organization and high performance roles with the special forces as a contractor for both the US Air Force and Army Special Operations Command. He also serves as the chair of the AASPT Sports Performance Enhancement SIG & was selected as the 2023 NSCA Sports Medicine Professional of the year. His publications and presentations cover the management of tendinapathies and other athletic overuse injuries, psychometric properties of performance testing, data informed decision making, and the integration of sound exercise prescription into rehabilitation and the return to performance processes. Scot is also finishing a PhD under Franco Impellizzeri & Patrick Ward through the University of Verona with a focus on Measurement Theory & Predictive Modeling.
