Description:

The use of progressive loading via individualized exercise is the foundation that physical rehabilitation is built upon. Although many rehab professionals understand this, there is often a significant discrepancy between best practice and clinical implementation. The exercise science literature continues to progress at a rapid pace with many key principals that should inform the clinical approach to exercise prescription.

This will be a two-day course focused on exercise prescription to maximize therapeutic programs in the rehab setting. The course will be comprehensive and include biomotor/mechanical considerations, needs analysis, programming, and application of concepts such as dosage, load monitoring, energy system development, and using feedback to drive the manipulation of relevant variables. Application to specific diagnoses will be explored.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Set goals for specific energy systems
  • Develop specialized exercises to achieve rehab goals
  • Understand an implement the training fundamentals of accommodation, continuity,
    individuality, progression, specificity, synergy, and variability
  • Critically apply concepts of dosage including load, volume of work, and rest periods
  • Develop a concise, efficient, and effective home exercise program
  • Critically analyze and advance through different phases of exercises as patients progress
  • Develop a rehab algorithm based on a patient’s specific work or sport requirements
  • Perform a patient needs analysis and program based upon it
  • Use feedback to progress the program for that individual
  • Encourage patient independence and wellness
